So, I got the new Dream Theater album. First, let me say that I feel that it's a return to what make Images and Words so great.
1. On the Backs of Angels: 1st single from the album, I really like how it feels less heavy and lighter while still retaining that classic DT sound. 8/10
2. Build Me Up, Break Me Down: Solid track, if a bit unremarkable. Not my favorite track, but on this album that's not saying much. 7.5/10
3. Lost Not Forgotten: Guitar solo. Holy CRAP. 10/10
4. This is the Life: see 2. Build Me Up, Break Me Down 8/10
5. Bridges in the Sky: Almost reminds me of Learning to Live. A great track? You bet! 10/10
6. Outcry: Sweet Jesus. I may just have broken down when I heard the genius at work here. It's a bit like The Dance of Eternity, but with vocals. WOW. 11/10 (because I can)
7. Far From Heaven: Here to the end of the album is ballads. Very, very good ones, mind you. This is the least remarkable, and also the shortest track on the album. 7.8/10
8. Breaking All Illusions: Well, I really like this track, but I can't really think of anything that remarkable from it. Very good, if a bit generic DT. But remember, generic Dream Theater beats exceptional (any other band). 9/10
9. Beneath the Surface: Easily one of the best tracks on the album. Slower and quieter doesn't mean worse. 9.5/10
OVERALL 9/10
A dramatic turn of events, no. A very big event, yes; this album proves that Dream Theater is at least as good without Mike Portnoy, and indeed, his departure may have heralded the return to the band's roots.
